Description

A midwinter holiday fantasy romance anthology…

A Wynter Fyre by Darynda Jones

In a world where vampyres have been hunted to near extinction, the daughter of a demon is sent to save their race. Wynter ends the Blood Wars, but a single drop of vampyre blood accidentally crosses her lips. As punishment, she’s encased in stone for a hundred years. When she awakens, she vows revenge. Even if it means her demise. Her quest leads her to the vampyre prince who supposedly started the wars. He comes to her aid after she’s attacked, and Gareth’s deadly prowess may be exactly what Wynter needs to defeat the woman who created her. Or exactly what she needs to thaw her frozen heart.

Of Fate and Fire by Amanda Bouchet

The Kingmaker Chronicles meets modern-day New York City! Piers, an exiled warrior from Thalyria, finds himself in the Big Apple just before the holidays. The world and everything in it might be utterly foreign to him, but that won't stop Piers from helping to complete a vital mission for Athena and protect Sophie, a French teacher from Connecticut who's suddenly knee-deep in inexplicable phenomena, danger, and henchmen after an Olympian treasure that should never have ended up in her hands—or remained on Earth after the Greek gods abandoned it.

The King of Hel by Grace Draven

Castil il Veras, daughter of lesser boyars, attends the gatherings that celebrate her best friend's upcoming marriage to the cursed king of a sorcerous kingdom. She soon learns that even marked by the magic of the Wastelands, Doranis of Helenrisia is everything she's ever desired in a mate—and absolutely forbidden to her. Bound by duty to crown and country, Doranis has traveled to the Caskadan empire to marry a woman who loathes the sight of him. During the prenuptial celebrations, he meets a scribe who finds him fascinating instead of repellent, but Castil is beyond his reach. Fate, however, would have it otherwise, and a beseeching letter from a dying queen will bring them together again in a land gripped by endless winter and old magic.

Familiar Winter Magic by Jeffe Kennedy

It’s holiday time at Convocation Academy, but best friends Han and Iliana are finding it hard to celebrate. As a familiar, Iliana is facing her assignment to a life of servitude to a wizard, very soon. And Han… despite being tested by the oracle daily, he is still uncategorized. As Iliana and Han face being separated forever, they at last find the courage—or desperation—to break the rules and acknowledge their deeper feelings for each other. But it will take more than true love to save them from the laws of the Convocation…

Review of Haruka Mitsui's ANYWAY, I'M FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU

Many girls believe Mizuha leads a charmed life. She is close friends with four of the coolest guys at school. However, Mizuha’s world gets turned upside down on her 17th birthday. She impulsively confesses to her crush only to be turned down. Then one of her childhood friends confesses his feelings to her. Mizuha does not know how to handle Kizuki’s interest in her.

Kizuki’s determined pursuit forces Mizuha to re-examine their relationship. Will this new development ruin what they once had?

I am feeling kind of blasé about this manga. Something feels missing to me. I cannot explain what exactly. However, I like how the story takes place during the 2020 pandemic. I do like the art style.

Review of Donna Grant's DARK ALPHA'S SILENT NIGHT

The Reapers never had a reason to celebrate holidays. That is until their mates pulled together and introduced them to the marvel of Christmas. River and her companions want to reward their Reaper spouses with some holiday fun and festivities. Even Reapers deserve some down time to enjoy time with their family and friends.

DARK ALPHA’S SILENT NIGHT is book 12.5 in Donna Grant’s paranormal series, REAPER. This short novella really impacts home that family is not always linked by blood. I normally do not read holiday (especially Christmas) themed stories. I think I reached my quota for this year.

I started this series late, so I never got to read several of the beginning books. So, I did not know River and Kyran’s story. However, that did not hinder my ability to follow the story, and its purpose.

Review of Roxanne St.Claire's PEPPERMINT BARK

Rating: 4.5

Colleen Kilcannon Mahoney is the Dogfather’s widowed sister. She co-owns a dog-treat store with her daughter. Colleen finds herself the latest victim of the Dogmothers’ matchmaking. However, the man they chose is the same boy who stood her up forty-five years ago. Colleen decides to assist Tim with his goodwill mission. Being with him again reawakens some of her teenage dreams. Can Colleen prove to her family that she is not averse to change? Or will she let doubt stand in the way of a second chance?

Timothy “Tim” McIntosh is the vice president of property development for a high-end hotel chain. He returns to Bitter Bark, North Carolina, to settle his late father’s affairs. Tim agrees to fulfill his father’s deathbed request. He needs to find three certain people and grant them their heart’s desire. Tim also wants to apologize to Colleen for skipping out on her on prom night. She helps him discover his own heart’s desire. Will Tim manage to finish his mission in time? And can he convince Colleen to see the world with him?

I am so glad that Colleen got a happily-ever-after. She definitely deserved one. I adore Colleen’s devotedness to her family. She would do anything for family, especially her sons and daughter, and she knows her family would do the same for her. What I like the most about Colleen is her willingness to help Tim with his mission. She did not hold a grudge against him, especially once he explained his reason for leaving. Colleen respects Tim for helping his late father make reparation to the people he wronged.

Tim is a sweetheart. I like that the first thing he wanted to do in Bitter Bark is to find Colleen and to apologize. Tim lived forty-five years with regret about standing her up that long ago night. What I adore the most about him is Tim’s willingness to complete his father’s deathbed request. He knew what kind of man his father was. The two may have parted on bad terms; however, Tim did not hold that against the man.

PEPPERMINT BARK is book nine in Roxanne St. Claire’s dog-themed, contemporary romance series, THE DOGMOTHER, a spinoff from her THE DOGFATHER series. The story can easily standalone, but I recommend reading the prior books and novellas, along with the previous series, to appreciate the three families’ dynamics. I am generally not a fan of the second-chance trope. However, I did not mind as much with this story since it is between a much older couple.

PEPPERMINT BARK is a sweet and wholesome tale focused on a second chance at a later-in-life romance. I am dying to know who is next on the Dogmothers’ matchmaking radar? Ella? Or Nick?

Review of Janna MacGregor's A DUKE IN TIME

Rating: 4.5

Christian Vareck, the Duke of Randford, is a celebrated war hero. He wants nothing to do with his half-brother’s messes, especially the man’s three widows. One widow insists that Christian help them find a solution to avoid social ruin. He needs Kat’s assistance to establish a business to support his soldiers. Christian never imagined he would fall in love with her. Can Christian overcome his emotional demons? Will Katherine’s secrets destroy any hope of a future together?

Katherine “Kat” Vareck owns and operates a popular linen and begging store. She hopes to further her business by winning the contract to be a royal supplier. After her husband’s untimely death, Kat discovers the cad had two other wives. She wants to help the women avoid ruination by asking their brother-in-law, the Duke of Randford, for help. However, Kat’s own past threatens to destroy everything she has built. Can Katherine put her past to rest for good? Or will her secrets stand in the way of her future?

Christian is such a sweetheart. He is a man who has been hurt by his father and stepmother’s cool indifference and wild ways. His gruff attitude hides a vulnerable heart.  I admire Christian’s determination to help his soldiers, mainly the ones born in the common case. He is even willing to use his noble influence for their benefit. What I love the most about Christian is his acceptance of Katherine. He never looked down on her, once he learned about her background and past. Also, Christian acknowledges and admires Kat’s business sense.

Katherine is such an inspirational woman. She proves that a woman does not need a man to succeed in the world. Katherine may have come from a murky background, but she never allowed that to dictate her future. I admire Katherine’s ability to build a successful business from nothing, especially in a male-dominated society. She purposely hires those the public snubs or looks down on. What I adore the most about Katherine is how she willingly takes care of the other wives. She could have left them to their own devices. Instead, she invited them into her home and looked after them.

A DUKE IN TIME is book one in Janna MacGregor’s brand-new historical romance series, THE WIDOW RULES. This is my first venture in this author’s works. The story’s premise is what captured my attention. The trigamist angle is not commonly found in historical romances, especially amongst the echelon. I plain to check out the author’s backlog once time permits since I enjoyed her writing style.

A DUKE IN TIME is a captivating tale of two wounded souls realizing where they truly belong. I have an inkling on who the author plans to pair Beth Howell with; however, I am looking forward for Constance and Jonathan’s book first.

Review for Anna Bennett's GIRLS BEFORE EARLS

Review Courtesy of Romance Junkies
 Rating: 4.5

Gabriel “Blade” Beckett, Earl of Bladenton, searches for another finishing school to accept his rebellious niece. He needs her away from London for the summer, so he can properly court a potential bride without any problems. Blade offers a generous donation to Miss Lively’s school if she will take on his niece. The woman agrees, only if he will visit the girl every other week. Blade cannot resist tempting the button-upped headmistress to improperness. Can Hazel teach Blade to love again? Will her love heal his wounded heart?

Miss Hazel Lively is the headmistress of a seaside finishing school for girls. She hopes to attract wealthier clientele to her fledgling enterprise. Hazel agrees to take on a rebellious teenage girl but under one condition: the girl’s guardian must visit every other week. She fights her growing attraction to the charismatic earl with each visit. However, he cannot give Hazel the one thing she truly wants. When her school’s livelihood is at risk, she has no choice but to turn to Blade for help. Will Hazel choose her school over Blade? Can she truly give him up?

Blade is such a sweetheart! He is a man who has been hurt and betrayed in the past. Blade refuses to expose himself to any form of love to protect himself. I like how Blade uses his charm and influence to help Hazel and his school. He could have turned a blind eye to her predicament. What I adore the most about Blade is his open mindedness. He does not share his peer’s views on a woman’s place. Blade never tried to curtail his niece’s interests and pursuits.

I adore Hazel! She presents a tough exterior to the world. This is her defense mechanism to protect her compassionate heart and nature. I like how Hazel empathizes with Kitty. Being an orphan herself, she understands why the girl behaves as she does. Hazel also wants to give Kitty what she desperately needs. What I love the most about Hazel is her dedication to her students. She encourages them to pursue their interests. Hazel also believes all girls, nobles and commoners alike, deserve a good and proper education.

GIRLS BEFORE EARLS is the first book in Anna Bennett’s new historical romance series, ROGUES TO LOVERS. I really enjoyed the author’s novella in the KISSING UNDER THE MISTLETOE anthology, so I decided to try out one of her full-length novels. It did not disappoint. I soon found myself immersed in the characters and the plot.

GIRLS BEFORE EARLS is a charming tale of two people who are afraid to love, learning to open their hearts to each other. I will be keeping an eye out for the next installment. I cannot wait to see who is next!

Review: Donna Grant's DARK ALPHA'S NEED

Torin is a Reaper, an elite solider for Death. He and fellow Reaper, Aisling, are tasked to find Breda and question her. They need the information she can provide about the Others. There is just something about Breda that calms the rage inside Torin. Can he protect her from the Others?

Breda is a dark fae. She tries to evade the Others from dragging her back into their fold. Breda encounters Torin and Aisling while hiding. She decides to take her chances with the Reapers by providing them information. Can Breda trust Torin with her secrets? What sacrifices will she make to be with him?

Okay, I really like the fact that Breda is an empath. It is something rarely used in books outside of high fantasy genre. I like how Breda sees her gift as a curse than a gift.

DARK ALPHA’S NEED is book twelve in Donna Grant’s paranormal romance series, REAPERS. It is necessary to read the prior books to better understand the series’ overall plot. We learn a little more about the new grouping of Others forming amongst the Fae.

Review: Satoru's DOING HIS BEST TO CONFESS, Volume 1

Natsuaki is a popular and handsome high school student. He is especially popular with the girls. Natsuaki always wears an impassive expression on his face. This makes it difficult for him to show his interest in his classmate, Nashida. Natsuaki spends most of his time in his head, figuring out the best way to confess to her.

Okay, I really like the role reversal here. Instead of the girl crushing on a popular guy. We get a popular guy crushing on a girl.  I love how oblivious Natsuaki is to his popularity. He does not seem aware of his female classmates’ interest in him.

The storyline is on the light and cute side.

There is nothing wrong with that. I practically whipped through it easily.

Review of Nakaba Harufuji YOU'RE MY CUTIE, volume 1

Madoka has a thing for cute boys, especially those whose personalities match their appearances. One day, she learns that her father hired a part-timer. Shikura treats Madoka rudely, and he wants nothing to do with her. Madoka soon understands why he behaves so standoffish when his female classmates come to the restaurant. She selflessly steps forward to protect Shikura from unwanted attention. A tentative friendship blooms between them.

Shikura’s situation reminds me of the four protagonists of Tomoko Hayakawa’s THE WALLFLOWERS – where girls are only obsessed with his looks, and when he is with Madoka, their behavior turns catty and mean. However, Shikura’s temperament is completely different.

I really like Madoka. She is so understanding. Her attitude towards Shikura changes once she understands why he behaves so unapproachable. She also tries to put him at ease, avoiding subjects that would make him feel uncomfortable, and protects him from his fanbase.

This manga did not disappoint! I found it incredibly cute! I will definitely be picking up a volume for my collection once it is released.

Out now: Jeffe Kennedy's The Dragon's Daughter and the Winter Mage

Invisible Loner

Gendra—partblood daughter of an elite mossback soldier and the only shapeshifter to achieve the coveted dragon form—is anything but interesting. She’s actually plain and awkward and … invisible. Every guy she meets either looks right through her or—worse—thinks of her as just a friend. Fortunately Gen is far too practical to wallow in self pity. Much.

 A Search for True Love

But as Gen accompanies her oldest friends on a quest for Her Majesty High Queen Ursula, she can’t help feeling bitter about her lonely fate as, two by two, they pair off with each other. As usual, everyone but odd-woman-out Gen seems to be finding the happiness in true love that has always eluded her. And Gen’s pathetic attempts to come out of her shell have only met with social disaster.

 Dragon’s Daughter

Still, with magic rifts plaguing the Thirteen Kingdoms and a strange intelligence stalking them from an alter-realm, Gen has plenty to deal with—especially when she’s cut off from the group, isolated and facing a lethal danger. It just figures that Gen is on her own, once again. But with no one coming to save her, she has only herself to rely upon.

And, perhaps, the help of a mysterious, stranded magician…

Review: Jill Shalvis' THE FAMILY YOU MAKE

Rating: 4.5

Jane Parks is a traveling nurse. She is not the kind of girl who sticks to one place or puts down roots. Jane annually returns to Tahoe, California, to work the ski season. She finds herself stranded in a gondola, during a freak blizzard, with a good-looking stranger. Jane reluctantly agrees to be Levi’s pretend girlfriend for his parents’ anniversary dinner. She soon finds herself conflicted by what is happening between them. Can Jane trust Levi with her heart? Will she let their fake relationship become real?

Levi Cutler is a data scientist consultant. He hesitantly returns home to help his family with their sporting goods store. A snowstorm strands Levi and a snarky red head on a gondola. He prepares for the worst and calls his mother to lie about having a girlfriend. Levi convinces Jane to pretend to be his girlfriend, only to appease his mother. He never thought he would actually fall in love with her. Can Levi help Jane heal from her trust and abandonment issues? Will he convince her to give them a chance?

I am overjoyed that Levi is a nerdy type! He is the family oddity. I love how Levi throws out random science facts. He reminds me of my favorite character, Dr. Spencer Reid, from the crime drama Criminal Minds. I admire Levi’s dedication to his family. He may often feel like he does not belong, but he has never ignored his family when they need him the most. What I adore the most about Levi is his ability to understand Jane. He knows that she has issues to work through, and he accepts her for herself.

Jane is such a remarkable yet flawed woman. I could not help but empathize with her from the start. I understand Jane’s trust and abandonment issues. She has been dealt a bad hand in the family department. I like how Jane is not put off by Levi’s intelligence. She understands that is part of his unique charm, and she accepts him for who he is. What I love the most about Jane is her need to help others. Despite her crummy childhood, she chose a profession that helps those in need.

THE FAMILY YOU MAKE is the first book in Jill Shalvis’ contemporary romance/woman’s fiction series, THE SUNRISE COVE. Fans of the author’s WILDSTONE books will love this brand-new series. It follows the same formula, especially the humorous wit Jill Shalvis is known for. I adore the secondary romance in the background. We get two romances for the price of one.

THE FAMILY YOU MAKE is an uplifting tale of two rejected souls learning to heal from their pasts and open-up to love. No one can write small-town romances like Jill Shalvis. I cannot wait to see who is next in this keeper series!

Review: Julie Ann Walker's SHOT ACROSS THE BOW

Rating: 4.5

Spiro “Romeo” Delgado is a former Navy Seal. He and his six Seal brothers search for a particular Spanish sunken ship. Romeo has no intention of giving up on his womanizing ways. That is until he meets one Mia Ennis. Romeo fights against his building interest in the shy yet smart woman. When they find themselves marooned on a sandbar, he gives in to the inevitable. Can Romeo protect Mia from the threat following them? Or will he lose more than just his heart?

Mia Ennis is an accomplished marine archeologist. She helps the Deep Six guys by documenting the salvage process of the legendary galleon Santa Cristina. Mia hides a painful past that she fears will alienate herself from the others. She agrees to keep things amicable between herself and Romeo. However, the man tests Mia’s resolve. Things heat up between them when they end up stranded on a small island. Can Mia come to terms with her past? Or will it stand between her and Romeo?

Romeo is so much more than what I expected. He is a man blessed with a sexy face and incredible physique. However, Romeo proves that good looks bring its own set of complications and problems. I admire Romeo’s bravado and determination to become someone better. He escaped his crummy roots without his family’s approval or help. Romeo even wants to help kids like himself avoid that kind of future. What I adore the most about Romeo is how he comes to Mia’s defense. He tries to help her see past her mother’s lies to her true worth and beauty.

Mia is such a great fit for Romeo. Her quiet and reticent demeanor balances Romeo’s flirty, outgoing ways. They both come from dysfunctional families, which painted their outlook on their self-worth and relationships. I like Mia’s selflessness. She thinks of others before herself, even when that person is not so deserving. What I adore the most about Mia is how she sees past Romeo’s sexy appearance to the man beneath the façade. She acknowledges the qualities other women either overlook or dismiss openly.

SHOT ACROSS THE BOW is book five in Julie Ann Walker’s romantic suspense series, THE DEEP SIX. It is necessary to read the prior four books to understand the overall plot. I like how the author sets up the next couple for her upcoming book in the background. It makes me antsy for the next installment because I am already invested. I am still glad the author returned to this exciting series after a lengthy pause.

SHOT ACROSS THE BOW is a thrilling tale of two people overcoming not only danger but their insecurities to be together. I am bummed that this series is coming to an end. I simply cannot wait for Doc and Camilla’s story! It promises to be a good one!

Review: Sophie Jordan's THE RAKE GETS RAVISHED

 Rating: 5

Silas Masters owns and operates London’s most popular gaming establishment. He wins the Kittinger farm in a game of cards. Silas finds a mysterious woman awaiting him in his rooms, and he falls for her alluring wiles. When he discovers what she did, he plans to find the nameless woman and make her pay. However, Silas’ plans change once he finds Mercy. She awakens something within him. Can Silas protect Mercy from her brother’s thoughtlessness? What will he willingly give up for her?

Mercy Kittinger works and maintains the family farm. She also oversees her younger sister’s welfare. When their brother gambles away the farm, Mercy does what she must to get it back, even seduce the blackguard. She never thought Silas would follow her home. Mercy tries to forget their one passionate night, but Silas’ presence makes it difficult. However, her brother’s wastrel ways catch up with the Kittinger family. What sacrifices will Mercy make for her siblings? Will she lose more than just her heart?

Silas won me instantly. He plays the sardonic and cold-hearted blackguard, but in truth, he really is a decent man at his core. I admire Silas’ stance on women. He refuses to allow any man to disabuse or take advantage of them, especially in his establishment. Silas even accepted Gwen’s profession when other men disapproved. What I adore the most about Silas is his instant protectiveness towards Mercy. He hated how her family used and treated Mercy and her altruism.

I liked Mercy from the start! She is a woman who is no stranger to hard, respectable work. Mercy refuses to live an idle life like her twin brother and younger sister. Instead, she works tirelessly alongside her employees. I admire Mercy’s selflessness. She purposely puts her siblings’ needs and wants before her own, despite their disrespect. What I like the most about Mercy is her temerity. She is a woman who knows her mind. Mercy does not second guess her wants, especially when it comes to sex.

THE RAKE GETS RAVISHED is the second book in Sophie Jordan’s historical romance series, THE DUKE HUNT. The story can easily stand alone. There is no major ongoing plot happening in the background. I would, however, suggest reading the previous book, only to familiarize with the story’s setting. The couple from the first book, THE DUKE GOES DOWN, does make a brief appearance, close to the end.

THE RAKE GETS RAVISHED is a captivating tale of two souls discovering love during an unlikeliest time. I practically gobbled up this book in one sitting. I could not put it down. I have a hunch on who the author plans to pair Gwen with. I cannot wait to see if my guess is correct!

A recommended read.

Review: Casey Griffin's A WEDDING'S TAIL

Rating: 4.5

Zoe Plum is a wedding planner. She is a sexual health representative on the side. She encounters the flirtatious Levi Dolson at the most harrowing wedding of her career. She hopes the Wedding Expo will help boost her business even higher, only to find herself running into Levi again. The sexy rockstar refuses to take no for an answer. A series of accidents threatens to ruin all of Zoe’s plans for her best friend’s wedding. Can Zoe pull off a miraculous wedding for her friend Piper? Will she finally open her bruised heart to Levi?

Levi Dolson is the lead singer for a promising rock band. He agrees to be his college friend’s last minute, stand-in groomsman. Levi cannot conceal his growing interest in the cool and aloof wedding planner. In hopes of furthering their association, he signs up for the Wedding Expo. However, Zoe continues to play hard-to-get. When a series of disastrous incidents follows her, Levi tries to help her uncover the saboteur. Can Levi sway Zoe to take a chance on them? Or will he be forced to give up on her for good?

I cannot help but like and admire Zoe. She is the ever practical, responsible, and confidant one of her trio of friends. However, Zoe has been hurt in the most horrendous way possible. I like how Zoe’s past heartache and pessimism does not interfere with her business. She strives to make every customer’s dream come true on their special day, regardless of their bizarre demands. What I adore the most about Zoe is her steadfast dedication to her two best friends. There is little she would not do for Piper and Addy, even jeopardize her life and business for them.

What is there not to like about Levi! He is such a fun character! Levi’s outgoing personality really balances out Zoe’s cool and collected demeanor. I admire Levi’s determination to follow his own path and dream rather than the one set up for him. He knows better than anyone what would make him happiest. What I love the most about Levi is his determination. He never once gave up on Zoe. Levi knew that she was well worth the wait. He realized that she first needed to heal before she could open her heart again.

A WEDDING TAIL is the third book in Casey Griffin’s doxie-themed series, A RESCUE DOG ROMANCE. The author received the rights back from her previous publisher to this fun series, which gives her the chance to reintroduce it. This story got a touch up too, as with the previous two. It is shorter than its 2017 release. I do recommend reading this series in order. Each story can stand alone; however, there is a background plot that spans the three books. Also, readers can get a better understanding of Piper, Addison, and Zoe’s close bond.

A WEDDING TAIL is a remarkable tale of one woman finally letting go of the past to heal and discover love again. I am delighted that the author announced there will be a fourth book. Yay! More dachshund books to look forward to. I cannot wait to see who is next!

Review: Karakarakemuri's LAUGHING UNDER THE CLOUDS, volume 4

RATING: 4.5

Soramaru and Chutaro are having difficulties coming to terms with their brother’s death. Sora feels lost without Tenka’s guidance, so he resumes his training beneath Abe no Sosei. While training, he finds his resolve to assume the Kumo’s duties. Meanwhile, a lost Chutaro leaves home

Everyone, except a certain few, believes the Orochii threat is finished. New players enter the fray. But is the Orochii truly dead? Did Tenka sacrifice his life in vain? Or are things about to take a drastic turn?

My heart aches for Sora and Chutaro.  Tenka willingly stepped forward to be mother, father, and elder brother to the younger Kumo siblings. He gave up his former life for them. Sora and Chutaro finally realize that he kept their little family together. But can the two continue without him?

Okay, so I hope something “more” brews between Soramaru and Nishiki! The two are so adorably cute in their interactions. I like how kind and concern Sora is towards the Fuuma girl.

The anime really follows the manga faithfully, so far. I really miss Tenka’s comical antics.

Review for Nalini Singh's ARCHANGEL's LIGHT

Illium – Blue or Bluebell to his friends - is the son of the Archangel Aegaeon and the angelic artist, The Hummingbird. He is one of Archangel Raphael’s elite Seven. At his sire’s behest, Illium travels to China to assist Aodhan. He feels conflicted. Illium mourns the closeness he once shared with Aodhan, but he does not want to stand in the way of his friend’s healing. They investigate the wreckage China’s former archangel leaves behind, but what they discover will shock them down to their core. Can their strained relationship be repaired?

Aodhan -Sparkles to a chosen few- is one of Archangel Raphael’s Seven. He is an accomplished artist, and the Hummingbird’s cherished protégé. Aodhan agrees to act as Archangel Suyin’s temporary second. He believes time apart from Illium will help him move past his trauma. Aodhan hopes they can salvage their deep bond while investigating a ravaged China. However, they find more than what they bargained for. What new horrors did Lijuan leave behind? Can Aodhan convince Illium that he is no longer broken?

Illium has always been my favorite character from this series since his first appearance. I adore his playful and infectious personality. Illium loves everyone in his close sphere equally and unconditionally, well except for Aodhan. That is just the type of angel he has always been. Someone must do something horrendous or evil to make Illium despise or hate them.  What I love the most about Illium is his selflessness. He may not understand the hurt his mother and Aodhan went through, but he never begrudged them the space they needed to heal, even if it hurt him.

Aodhan is another one of my fond favorites. I could not help but empathize with him from the start. I have always had a soft spot for the wounded/tortured types. The author finally reveals Aodhan’s past, and man was it devastating.  What I adore the most about Aodhan is how he always looks after Illium. Even at his lowest, Aodhan made the effort to reach out to his friend when Illium needed him most.

ARCHANGEL’S LIGHT is book fourteen in Nalini Singh’s wildly popular paranormal series, GUILD HUNTER. I highly recommend reading the prior books to understand the build-up leading to this story. I love how the author balances the chapters. One will be about the present, and then the next gives readers a glimpse into the two’s past. This formula allows us to see the bond between Illium and Adohan start and grow.

This book does not follow the standard m/m romance storytelling, which I adore. The author focuses more on the gritty and raw emotion between two individuals than dirty smut.

I know there will be people unhappy that these two ended up together. Honestly? I would have it no other way. It made sense to me. Illium and Aodhan belong together. I have always felt that way early in the series.

ARCHANGEL’S LIGHT is the most anticipated book in Nalini Singh’s GUILD HUNTER series. Illium has always been the fandoms’ favorite. Generally favored characters from a series, their stories tend to fall flat. That is not the case with this book. The author did not disappoint!

Review for Eva Leigh's 'THE GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO RAKES"

 Rating: 4.5
Review courtesy of Romance Junkies

Kieran Ransome is the third son of an Earl. He, along with his brother and friend, must marry a respectable woman within a year or be financially cut off. Kieran turns to the one woman who can help him accomplish such a feat. Reluctantly, he agrees to Celeste’s astonishing terms. However, he never expects to lose his rakish heart to her. Can Kieran help Celeste escape an unwanted engagement? At what risks?

Miss Celeste Kilburn is the daughter of a dockyard magnate. She is society’s most respectable woman. Celeste tires of playing the good girl. She craves for a taste of adventure before becoming engaged to a pretentious Earl. She agrees to assist Kieran, only if he agrees to escort her around London’s immoral scenes. Can Celeste maintain her sterling reputation? Or will she willingly embrace Kieran’s wanton lifestyle?

Kieran is such a delectable bad boy. He is a man who does not care what other people think of him and his past times. Instead, he embraces them to the fullest. I absolutely hate how Kieran’s parents and elder brother treats him. It explains why he does such outrageous and naughty things. I adore Kieran’s protectiveness towards his other brother and fellow partner-in-crime. He despises how their parents and their peers malign Finn, especially in front of him. What I love the most about Kieran is how he encourages Celeste to be her own person. He does not try to curtail her as society and others do.

Celeste is such a remarkable young woman. She is tired of being the person society and others dictate her to be. I like how intuitive and observant Celeste is. She sees far more than what people are aware of. Plus, she knows when to use that information as a weapon. I admire Celeste’s altruism. She willingly sacrifices her own happiness to appease and protect both her father and brother. What I love the most about Celeste is how she wants to help the poor and working class better themselves. She does not try to hide her humble background, nor does she try to forget it. Instead, Celeste wants to use her new resources to give back to her old community.

THE GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO RAKES is book one in Eva Leigh’s historical romance series, LAST CHANCE SCOUNDRELS. I am new to this author’s works. The story’s synopsis is what tempted me to give this book a try. It did not disappoint. I will be checking out the author’s other series when I get the chance.

THE GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO RAKES is a captivating tale of two peoples’ adventures through society’s respectable and seedier sides, only to discover their true selves and love. I have a guess on who the author plans for Finn Ransome. I cannot wait for the next book and see if my guess is correct!

Review for: Casey Griffin "FALLING FOR THE UNDER-DOG"

Rating: 4.5

Addison Turner is a dog stylist and doggie fashionista. She plans to present her doggie fashion line at a mixer for the Western Dog Show. Addison hopes to meet her Mr. Perfect there, also. However, things take a drastic turn when thieves dog-nap her show-dog models. Wherever she goes, more high-end dogs disappear. Addison turns to the other person being framed for the crime to clear their names. Can Addison and Felix catch the culprit before the dog show? Will she realize Felix is her true Mr. Perfect?

Felix Vaughn works the dog-circuit as a bartender. He plans to use his extra wages to put a down payment on a bar. Felix encounters Addison at the mixer for the Western Dog Show. When she asks for his help, he turns down her tempting offer. However, Felix changes his mind when he is implicated on the latest dognapping. Things heat up between them as he and Addison try to clear their names. Can Felix convince Addison he is the better man? Or will the situation ruin his chances at purchasing his bar?

Generally, I am not fond of the pink-wearing and overly optimistic heroine types. However, I grew to love Addison from book one, PAWS OFF THE BOSS. I adore her close friendship with Piper and Zoe. I only wish this book had more interaction between the three women like the first book. My only nitpick about Addison is how she wants the movie type happily-ever-after. She has this mental image of how her Mr. Perfect should be and looks like. That blinds her to the perfect person right in front of her.

Felix is such a dream!  He is a nice change-of-pace from the usual hero types found in all romance genres. Felix is a hardworking, single father doing the best he can. I love Felix’s wicked sense-of-humor. He is not afraid to be openly frank with Addison, especially regarding his interest in her. What I adore the most about Felix is his sense of responsibility towards his daughter. Everything he does is to benefit her. Felix puts his daughter’s needs before his own.

FALLING FOR THE UNDERDOG is the second book in Casey Griffin’s dachshund-themed series, A RESCUE DOG ROMANCE. Its former title was BEAUTY AND THE WEINER. The author revamped the story since she received the rights back to the three-book series. I like the subtle changes she made. There are more updated movies and actors mentioned in the story compared to the 2017 release.

FALLING FOR THE UNDERDOG is a charming and entertaining tale that proves what we want is not always what we need. I cannot wait to read the changes the author made for Zoe’s book!

Review:

This manga has three stories. Neither one interacts with the other, so they can stand alone.

The love scenes are on the tame side, which I am totally fine with. The author focuses more on the characters and plot than random, raunchy, explicit sex scenes.

The stories are more wholesome than complicated or dark.

Takemura is a loner. He prefers to keep to himself, a lesson he learned in high school. Take has no interest in socializing until a colleague at work pesters him. Natsui is Take’s opposite. He is well liked by all of his co-workers and peers. Natsui is also a single father. The two men run into each other in the supermarket, and Natsui invites Take over for dinner.

Natsui is a sweetheart! He refuses to allow Takemura to alienate himself. Natsui tries to include Take in all social gatherings, at work and outside of work.

I feel for Takemura. The incident at school scarred him from putting himself out there. He just does not want to experience that kind of hurt again. I like how Natsui’s influence is slowly helping Take become more approachable.

This is my favorite story of the whole manga. I guess I like the single father finding love with a man angle.

Kuma’s curt demeanor and scowly appearance makes people assume he is a delinquent. He is a third-year at high school. Yagi is an elite college student. He breaks up with his boyfriend in front of Kuma and his boyfriend’s younger brother. Something about Yagi’s expression haunts Kuma. He vows to make Yagi forget his ex and to make him happy.

The story felt a little one-sided to me. I wish it would have focused on Yagi, enough to give me a feel about his character. Mainly, the story felt like it was all about Kuma and his accepting his feelings.

Harada is a friendly and outgoing first-year college student. He is studying business. Kodama is a reserved and standoffish third-year college student. He studies psychology. Harada insists on becoming friends with Kodama after helping the older male when he fell ill. Kodama cannot help but psychoanalyze Harada’s “supposed” feelings.

I simply could not get into this story. It just fell flat to me.

I received this manga through Netgalley

Jeffe Kennedy's cover for The Dragon's Daughter and the Winter Mage

I simply cannot wait to get my hands on this book! I will definitely be doing a review after reading!

The cover is absolutely gorgeous. Don’t you agree?
September is my birthday month (though I rarely have good birthdays). This is something I can look forward too.

Invisible Loner

Gendra—partblood daughter of an elite mossback soldier and the only shapeshifter to
achieve the coveted dragon form—is anything but interesting. She’s actually plain and
awkward and … invisible. Every guy she meets either looks right through her
or—worse—thinks of her as just a friend. Fortunately Gen is far too practical to wallow in
self pity. Much.

A Search for True Love

But as Gen accompanies her oldest friends on a quest for Her Majesty High Queen
Ursula, she can’t help feeling bitter about her lonely fate as, two by two, they pair off with
each other. As usual, everyone but odd-woman-out Gen seems to be finding the
happiness in true love that has always eluded her. And Gen’s pathetic attempts to come
out of her shell have only met with social disaster.

Dragon’s Daughter

Still, with magic rifts plaguing the Thirteen Kingdoms and a strange intelligence stalking
them from an alter-realm, Gen has plenty to deal with—especially when she’s cut off from
the group, isolated and facing a lethal danger. It just figures that Gen is on her own, once
again. But with no one coming to save her, she has only herself to rely upon.
And, perhaps, the help of a mysterious, stranded magician…

Review: Home for a Cowboy Christmas by Donna Grant

Dwight Reynolds is former FBI and Homeland Security. He now runs the family ranch in Montana. Dwight agrees to hide a woman in the witness protection program for his friend. Something about Emmy draws him, yet he tries not to act on his growing attraction. However, the people searching for Emmy show up. Will Dwight’s military skills be enough to protect Emmy? Can he convince her to stay in Montana once the danger passes?

Emmy Garrett works for a large bookkeeping firm in Denver, Colorado. She is testifying against the city’s greatest mob bosses. When her location is compromised again, Emmy finds herself in Montana. Dwight and his dog, Sam, make her feel safe for the first time. However, Emmy cannot help but worry about endangering them with her problem. Can Emmy manage to survive until the trial? Or will she become another casualty?

Dwight is a man who feels the need to protect those around him. It is an ingrained trait. I admire Dwight’s honorable behavior. He refuses to take advantage of Emmy during a difficult time. Dwight knows she is not in a good mental or emotional place to welcome a relationship. What I adore the most about Dwight is his willingness to help Emmy deal with her PTSD. Since he is a recipient of the same problem, Dwight knows the signs and symptoms, so he knows the best ways to overcome it.

Emmy is such a courageous woman. She has been through such a harrowing experience that many people would have buckled beneath. I admire Emmy’s integrity. It took incredible bravado to testify against a mob boss. Emmy knew that it would endanger her life, but she could not let a criminal go unpunished. What I like about Emmy is how her traumatic experience allowed her to discover things about herself. She let many opportunities pass because of her fear and uncertainty.

HOME FOR A COWBOY CHRISTMAS is a standalone, holiday-themed novel from Donna Grant. I am not really a fan of holiday stories; however, I do make exceptions for certain authors. I like how the story encompasses both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving is a holiday not commonly found in books. However, the two holidays are not the main focus of the plot.

HOME FOR A COWBOY CHRISTMAS is a wholesome and warm-hearted tale with the right amount of suspense. Dwight and Emmy’s romance is more of a slow-burn than instant attraction, which made it easy to enjoy.

Review: Paws off the Boss by Casey Griffin

Aiden Caldwell is the CEO of a prestigious investment firm. He meets Piper when she interrupts a business meeting to deliver a singing telegram. Aiden never thought he would see her again, only to run across her at the rescue dog shelter. He cannot help but like the spunky and independent female. Dangerous mishaps happen around Piper, endangering her life and that of her canine charges. Can Aiden convince Piper to trust him? Or will a misunderstanding destroy their budding romance?

Piper Summers cannot seem to catch a break. She works three jobs to put herself through veterinary school. Piper even volunteers at the Dachshund Rescue center with her doxie partner, Colin. She just needs to hold on until she graduates. Piper encounters Aiden Caldwell during a disastrous singing telegram gig. She soon finds herself a victim of a stalker, who is determined to chase her from the center. However, Aiden proves to be her knight-in-Armani. Can Piper learn to rely on Aiden? Or will she crash-and-burn?

Aiden is such a love! He may have been born into a privileged life, but he never once acted like a snob. Aiden does not believe he can fix everything with money or his company’s influence. I like how he can be himself around Piper. She is the first person he has encountered who does not want something from him.  What I love the most about Aiden is how he taught Piper that it is all right to depend on others occasionally. That she does not have to deal with all her problems alone.

Piper is such a riot, especially her interaction with her partner-in-crime, Colin. She is a stubborn woman, one who hates asking others for help or assistance. Piper believes she must tackle the entire problem head on. I admire Piper’s drive and dedication. If it helps pay her tuition and bills, she will endure any unpleasant or degrading job. What I adore the most about Piper is her disinterest in Aiden’s money and influence. She may be down on her luck financially, but she refuses to rely on him for money.

PAWS OFF THE BOSS is the first book in Casey Griffin’s quirky, dachshund-oriented series, A RESCUE DOG ROMANCE. Its former title was MUST LOVE WEINERS. The author has received the right back to the series, and she decided to revamp the story. Of course, I had to read the changes. The story did not disappoint. It made me giggle and smile from start-to-finish. I am a dachshund mom, so it’s a delight to read a story with that particular dog breed.

PAWS OFF THE BOSS is a charming and hilarious tale of two people from different social standings learning to compromise to be together. I cannot wait to read the changes the author made in the next two books.

Review: The Haunted Homecoming

Verity Long eagerly anticipates her hometown’s homecoming weekend. She cannot wait to see her mother again – who returns home to watch the opening of the time capsule her class buried in 1986. The unveiling reveals more than what the community expects. Verity decides to use her ghostly expertise to help solve the case. However, her mother and her ghostly partner makes things difficult. Can Verity find the killer before the end of homecoming? Or will she find more than what she bargained for?

Sheriff Ellis Wydell expects more than the usual trouble during Sugarland, Tennessee’s homecoming weekend. The opening of a time capsule buried in 1986 brings even more people to his hometown. However, no one expects a dead body to be among the buried contents. Ellis knows that he cannot keep Verity, or her mother, from investigating the case. Can Ellis trust Verity to be vigilant and careful in her ghostly investigation?

I like the emergence of this new side of Verity’s personality. She is done with people taking advantage of her niceness and kindness. Verity no longer allows people to push her around but holds her own ground, thanks to a certain gangster’s influence.  I adore how Verity refuses to use her relationship with Ellis as a shield or weapon. She prefers to fight her own battles. What I like the most about Verity is her relationship with her mother. The two do not have the cookie-cutter perfect relationship. They have their fair share of problems.

The only complaint I have is that Ellis did not have much “show time” in this novel. He seemed to be mostly in the background, only to appear here or there. The danger element of Verity’s ghost career still concerns Ellis, but he is making the effort to work through that. I adore that about him. What I love the most about Ellis is his protectiveness towards Verity and Lucy. He adores Verity’s pet skunk.

Frankie has shown incredible growth in this book. He is at a crossroads in his afterlife. Frankie cannot help but feel inadequate when compared to his late brother and sister-in-law’s romance, and that feeling stands in the way of his relationship with Molly. It is uncharted territory for the snarky gangster. What I love the most about Frankie is his concern towards Lucy. He and the skunk have always had a tenuous relationship. However, when someone threatens Lucy, he quickly forgets his woes and wants to protect her.

THE HAUNTED HOMECOMING is book ten in Angie Fox’s comical paranormal romance series, SOUTHERN GHOST HUNTER MYSTERIES. The story can easily stand alone. However, I highly suggest reading the prior nine books and novellas to understand both Verity and Frankie’s gradual evolution. I approve of the direction the author went with side characters, Melody and Duranja.

THE HAUNTED HOMECOMING is an entertaining, quirky and light-hearted mystery tale. I never grow bored reading this series. I am on pins-and-needles for the next installment!

Review: The High Mountain Courty by A.K. Mulford

Remy is a red witch in hiding. She and her brown witch companions evade the witch hunters searching for them. Remy tries to flee when she encounters four mysterious fae in the tavern she works at. However, she finds herself coerced into accompanying them on their quest. Remy cannot fight her growing attraction to Hale, the Prince of the Eastern Kingdom. Will Remy and Hale find the magical artifacts in time? Can they successfully elude the Northern Kingdom? And what will Remy learn about herself?

Hale Norwood is the illegitimate son of the Eastern Kingdom’s monarch. He needs a red witch to help find two important magical artifacts to thwart the Northern Kingdom’s domination. He and his companions run across Remy in a backwater tavern. Hale presses her to aid him on his quest. Something about the red witch calls to him. What dangers await Hale and Remy on their quest? Can they keep the Northern Kingdom from ruling the world? Will Hale betray his father and kingdom to protect Remy?

Remy shows such incredible growth throughout the story. As the story progresses, she discovers the person she is meant to be, and she comes into her own. I admire Remy’s determination to learn how to fight and defend herself. She did not want to be dependent on others for protection.  What I like the most about Remy is how she encouraged Hale to reunite with his mother. She wanted him to understand how fortunate he was to still have her in his life.

Hale steadily won me over. At first, I thought he was too pompous and rude, especially towards Remy, Heather, and Fenrin. However, I started to soften towards him once I learned more about him. I empathize with Hale’s need for his father’s acceptance. He tries so hard to please the man, only for naught. What I like the most about Hale is how he encourages Remy to find herself. He gives her some helpful nudges along the way.

THE HIGH MOUNTAIN COURT is the first book in A.K. Mulford’s fantasy romance series, THE FIVE CROWNS OF OKRITH. It is also the author’s debut book. I like the author’s creative take on witches, especially how they are distinguished by color, and each caste has their own specialty. The story lagged in places, especially close to the end, but I understand the author needed the time to set up the way her world worked. I must admit that I do like the side characters Talhan and Briata. They made the story funny and entertaining.

THE HIGH MOUNTAIN COURT shows such incredible promise for the fantasy romance genre. It is nice to see another author venturing into my favorite genre. I am curious to see what further adventures await us in this world.

Review: Lisa Childs' THE HUNTED

 Review courtesy of Romance Junkies

RATING: 4

Sheriff Deacon Howell holds a deep hatred for Halcyon Hall, a former asylum known as Bainesworth Manor turned health spa. When the place claims another victim, he intends to catch the murderer. However, someone does not want Deacon to expose Bainesworth Manor’s oldest and darkest secrets. He never expected to be fascinated with one of its residents, a woman with her own deadly secrets. Can Deacon find the murderer before they kill again? Or will he lose more to Bainesworth Manor?

Olivia Smith is a famous pop star. She checks into an exclusive spa in Maine to escape her stalker. Olivia soon learns about the place’s horrific past. During her stay, she finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation. Olivia trusts no one, especially not the handsome sheriff on the case. When her stalker strikes again, she wants to run but impassable roads keep her at the resort. Will Olivia become another victim of Bainesworth Manor? Can she learn to trust Deacon?

Deacon is a man haunted by his entangled past with Bainesworth Manor. The place has always been his greatest downfall. I empathize with Deacon over his rocky relationship with his teen daughter. He truly cares for Holly and her wellbeing; he just does not know how to communicate with her. What I admire the most about Deacon is his integrity. He refuses to follow in his father’s corrupt footsteps. Instead, Deacon intends to bring all the past wrongs to light at great risks to his life.

Olivia is an inspiration for women and mistreated teens. She is a woman who has survived an abusive and neglected childhood. I admire how Olivia used music as an outlet to purge herself of the toxicity from those experiences. She could have bottled up all that negativity until it corrupted her soul. What I like the most about Olivia is her ability to recognize other tormented souls. She understood the turmoil and pain Deacon and Holly were experiencing. Olivia may not have set out to help father and daughter, but she did help the two to bridge the gap between them.

THE HUNTED is book two in Lisa Childs’ romantic suspense series, BANE ISLAND TRILOGY. I have not read the first book, so there were instances when I felt that I missed some vital information. However, it did not hinder my ability to follow the story’s plot. I wish the author would have stuck with just the hero, the heroine, and the villains’ point-of-view. The others seemed to boggle down the story’s pacing.

THE HUNTED is a thrilling tale of two people learning to accept their shortcomings during a terrible time. I hope the next book is about Edie and Elijah. I cannot wait to learn the rest of Bainesworth Manor’s lethal secrets.

Painting fun + story: Kheldin

The resin figure I chose to show is from LOOT-STUDIOS Welcome pack.

The mystery man – Yeah, I too thought of Aragorn/Strider from Lord of the Rings when I first saw it. Then another character came to mind (Kheldin)…

Sadly, I did not create him, and I do not know his owner’s real name. This character interacted with my first character Kiirri – who will always be dear to my heart. Kiirri and Kheldin is one of my favorite couples…

This is how I imagined he looked when Kiirri first encountered him in a tavern. I remember him sitting in a darken corner watching everyone in the room.

I hope someday I can find a figure that matches Kiirri

Please excuse any grammatical errors in the writing piece. This is actually a section from another novel of mine – that needs a massive overhaul. If it will ever get done I cannot say. Kheldin’s name is a place holder for now.

Kiirri cradled the earthenware cup with pale fingers. She shifted her stance to search for an ideal place to enjoy her treat. Maybe even partake in some conversation. Taverns, in her estimation, were the best place to gather intel and gossip.

She touched her gaze on each person within the room. Dwarves, centaur, and a variety of elves frequented the place. She even spotted a minotaur of all creatures.

Three harried barmaids flitted from table to table, removing cups and dishes only to replace them later. She commiserated with the one who attended the table with the centaur, enduring the man’s leer and swishing tale.

However, the occupant in the dim corner garnered her immediate attention. He blended seamlessly into the shadowy darkness. The cowl he wore obscured the parts of his face that would have been visual.

Kiirri sensed no malice or enmity from him. Then why all the distrustful glances?’ She pondered before tilting her nose up to scent the air. This enigmatic person challenged her animalistic senses.

She detected magic. It felt so soothing and warm to her senses. She sniffed again and caught the pungent tang of bark, leaves, and soil. A scent she often associated with the forest folk and the druii.

Intuition told her this person was not sylvan.  Beneath that she caught the unmistakable musk of man. That answers that question. Now the other.’

The man posed no threat. He simply sat in his corner and watched the tableau of the room without joining in. Her curiosity prompted her approach.

“May I join you?” Kiirri motioned her head to the empty chair at his table.
